In this guide, we'll tell you how to get the Front Line door code in Conscript and open up the Chapter 1 padlock you see at the beginning of the game.
Conscript is a love letter to the greats of survival horror games and it shows it — there are plenty of puzzles for you to solve. The very first puzzle you'll encounter is the classic combination lock, but finding the code can be a bit of a challenge. Read on to learn how to open up your first locked door!
How to Get the Front Line Door Code in Conscript
You can get the Front Line door code in Conscript by navigating through the trenches and making your way to the bottom-right of the trench complex; this will let you open the padlock in Chapter 1. You won't be able to rush through this area, though, so keep reading for our step-by-step instructions on how to get through this area.
First and foremost, it's important to understand that the Front Line door code appears to be randomly generated as far as we can tell. Fortunately, the random generation seems to be locked in for each playthrough; once you find it, you won't have to search for it again if you die or load a save file.
It is possible to speedrun this section by only getting half of the code. If you know two of four digits, it reduces the possible combinations from 10,000 to 100 and you could just try to guess the other two. However, abandoning your post may have consequences for the story that I haven't yet discovered, so be careful!
Here's the route you'll have to take on the map, along with specific instructions for each point:
1. Save and Prepare
First, you're going to want to save in the area right before Front Line. (If you've already walked outside, you can head back in to save. You have a high chance of engaging in multiple fights in your search for the Front Line door code in Conscript and you'll want to avoid replaying the whole opening of the game.
It's also a good idea to store any extra supplies you may have on hand — there's a lot that you can loot here. Bring your Trench Shovel, Rifle, Rifle Rounds, and 1 Bandage. Put everything else in your stash. You should also be certain that your Rifle is fully loaded.
Finally, make sure to keep your eyes open for any loot. You'll want to grab everything you can without hanging around for too long; the Germans will keep coming as you move through the trenches. When you're ready, head north.
2. Man the Machine Gun
You'll see the locked Front Line door directly to your right after you exit Fort Souville. Don't worry about going left or right just yet; instead, head directly north past the wounded soldier.
As you run north, your first right turn will be cut off by an exploding artillery shell. The path to the north will be cut off by a French soldier standing in the way. Turn left and you'll see a chest next to a red barrel. The chest has some Rifle Rounds in it. The red barrel will explode if shot, so be careful around it.
Continue past the chest and the red barrel and you'll come up to a machine gun with one French soldier standing next to it. That soldier will be quickly killed and you'll hear the sound of a whistle. Interact with the machine gun and get ready for a fight.
When the whistle sounds, a single German soldier will charge toward the machine gun. Shoot and kill the soldier, making sure not to waste too much ammo — you have fewer than 50 shots to get the job done.
A total of four soldiers will attack, one at a time. If they make it past the sandbag wall, you will need to back up and shoot them with your Rifle. The soldiers will keep coming at regular intervals, so letting one German soldier go by can quickly turn into a close-quarters fight against two or three Germans.
Once you've killed four Germans, you can safely dismount the machine gun. Head north to pick up ammo from any dead Germans. Once you reach the trench wall, head back south and walk past the machine gun.
3. Head East and Get the First Two Digits
Once you're past the machine gun, head to the right. Grab the Rifle Bullets from the bag on the wall, then head down and to the right past the sandbags.
Continue heading directly east, looting anything you find along the way. The southern path has a machine gun and a Grenade on the ground. Along the way, you'll see a chest that will have a First Aid Kit in it, a powerful healing item.
A short distance later, you'll come to a small stone building with a boarded-up door. Break the boards with your Trench Shovel and head inside. There are three key items to find here:
- A chest with a Grenade
- Shotgun Shells (under the box)
- The first half of the Front Line door code
Keep your eyes open while you're in this area as you might get one or two Germans coming toward you; be ready to fight them if necessary. Loot the chest and push the box to the right to get some Shotgun Shells. Then inspect the area to the bottom right to get the first two digits of the Front Line door code.
4. Go Southeast and Get the Last Two Digits
Once you've looted the stone building, head south and to the east. You'll see a circular path. Take the southern route and push a box out of the way.
As before, keep your ears open for a whistle and watch out for any incoming soldiers.
Once the box is out of the way, loot some Alcohol from the bag on the wall. Then, inspect the note on the left-hand wall.
This will give you the second half of the Front Line door code in Conscript.
At this point, you could rush to get back to the door — but there's a good opportunity to get a shiny new weapon first.
5. Head north and get the Pump Shotgun
Now that you have both pieces of the Front Line door code in Conscript, it's time to finish exploring this area as quickly as possible. Head directly north while hugging the right wall. When you reach the northernmost point of the trenches, you'll see a dead body by a fire. This is the Pump Shotgun.
Assign the Pump Shotgun to a hotkey, then head south.
6. Escaping the Trenches -or- Surviving the Battle
Now it's time to head back. Run down the left-hand southern path, then turn left. While you run, you'll see a terrifying sight coming at you from No Man's Land:
This is a Knight. Knights are heavily armored and love to fight in melee combat. It's a challenging fight, but killing the Knight will get you Gun Parts. You could try to run back to the left-most machine gun and get some free shots in, but be careful not to let the Knight get too close to you!
Whether you fight or run away, make your way back to the Front Line locked door. Take care to check your map and avoid any trenches that have been blocked off by debris from artillery shells. When you get back to the door, you can enter the code.
You now have two choices:
- Leave the battle early and abandon your post
- Finish the fight
I'm not sure, but I'm guessing that there may be gameplay consequences for abandoning your post. If you decide to stay and fight, you just need to keep killing Germans until you see this dialogue pop up:
7. Leaving the Front Line
Shortly afterward, you'll see the objective "Return to Pierre" pop up. Try to exit through the southern door and you'll see it's locked. Do not attempt to run back into the trenches; you'll quickly die from the gas attack.
After you've tried to go through the southern door, you'll gain the ability to safely go through the door to the right without being considered as "abandoning your post." From here, you'll have to run through some train tunnels to make your way back to Pierre.
