Set in the harrowing trenches of World War I, survival horror game Conscript puts you in the shoes of a French soldier named André who is searching for his missing brother in Verdun.
Conscript is a top-down survival horror game that puts you in a pretty awful situation. You've been conscripted to serve in the French Army in World War I and the Germans are steadily making their way across Europe. Your brother is fighting alongside you, too, but he's gone missing in action. It's up to you to stay alive, solve puzzles, and find him.
Players must navigate through a maze of trenches and crumbling military fortresses as they make their way across Verdun. Naturally, you won't be alone — there will be plenty of German soldiers roaming the land who are all too happy to brutally kill you with a trench shovel.
Surviving the war is about more than just simply killing the enemy. You'll also have to carefully manage your supplies to ensure that you have the right guns and enough ammo to deal with hostile forces at any time. Every bullet you find and every bandage you scavenge will ever so slightly tilt the odds in your favor.
Conscript also promises a fair amount of replayability to those who can survive its brutal experience. It features four difficulty levels, two different ways to save your game, and several different endings. There are also achievements for completing various challenge runs such as avoiding the use of certain weapons or completing the story with a minimal number of saves.
If you miss the vibe of old-school survival horror games and you want to explore a somewhat underserved setting, Conscript might just be the game for you. Tread lightly, though, lest you run around a corner and find your enemy waiting for you with a rifle at the ready.
