Fans of tabletop RPGs should be quite familiar with World of Darkness. A collection of tabletop RPGs roughly set in the same urban horror universe where players can let their inner evil run free. Now, thanks to a partnership with Demiplane, all of the materials you need to run a game online with friends will be in one convenient place called World of Darkness Nexus.
According to an official press release, World of Darkness Nexus is a digital platform dedicated to helping you run an online RPG session within the World of Darkness. This will include a character builder and interactive character sheet, a digital reader containing rules for the game's system as well as a lore compendium so players can stay on the same page. Finally, World of Darkness Nexus will include a digital play space with matchmaking and video chat.
This is especially helpful given how extensive the lore of World of Darkness is. Since it is not set in a traditional fantasy world like Dungeons and Dragons, but an alternative version of our modern world, a lot of information and detail needs to be expressed. A lot of this lore can be really dense and greatly affect how players approach character creation, narrative scenarios, or world building, and even depends on which RPG in the universe you're playing. This is especially felt in the Fifth Edition of Vampire: The Masquerade with the introduction of an event called The Second Inquisition, which lead to vampire society outlawing the use of social media to prevent any unwanted attention from vampire hunters.
Nevertheless, World of Darkness has always held a certain appeal to players. In addition to several well-received supplements and board games, there have been various video game adaptations. These have ranged from the 2004 cult classic Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines (with a long-awaited sequel stuck in development hell) to the frighteningly effective VR title Wraith: The Oblivion Afterlife to the critically lambasted Werewolf: The Apocalypse Earthblood.
World of Darkness Nexus will be officially coming online in 2022. However, if you are curious or eager, you can sign up here for early access.
