OnceLost Games has announced that The Wayward Realms, a spiritual successor to The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall created by former Elder Scrolls staffers, is heading to Kickstarter next month.

In a new behind-the-scenes video, creative director Ted Peterson discusses the project, which was originally announced all the way back in 2021. Peterson says the goal with The Wayward Realms is to restore "scope, choice, consequences, and roleplaying to RPGs".

The video goes into some detail regarding how OnceLost is crafting The Wayward Realms; the game will be built on Unreal Engine 5, putting it in the company of major titles like the upcoming Metal Gear Solid 3 remake and Smite 2.

The Wayward Realms aims to take RPGs back to their golden age.

According to Peterson, The Wayward Realms will combine the modern conveniences of Unreal Engine 5 with "classic CRPG design philosophies" like deep systems and a huge world to explore.

Work is ongoing to create the game's core systems and write its lore, but Peterson says he and his team now need your help to bring the project to life, which is why the Kickstarter campaign is being launched.

The Kickstarter aims to bring an Early Access version of The Wayward Realms to life. It'll contain an introduction set on the game's starting island, as well as a sample platter of its world, combat, and factions.

You can check out the behind-the-scenes video for The Wayward Realms right here. If Peterson and his team can keep their promises on this one, it could be pretty special.

We don't have a final date for the Kickstarter campaign's arrival yet, but it's set to go live sometime in May. You can choose to be notified when it goes live by heading here.

While you wait, you can also wishlist The Wayward Realms on Steam to keep up with its progress. We'll bring you more on this one as soon as we get it.
