Valheim Siege Weapons Guide | Battering Ram & Catapult

Our Valheim Siege Weapons Guide will tell you how to unlock Siege Weapons and how you can use the Catapult and Battering Ram to smash enemy structures.

Valheim is no stranger to tough battles, but the Ashlands Biome adds in some surprisingly strong fortresses that you'll have to breach. Unfortunately, nothing you can craft by hand can break in — you're going to need Siege Weapons to get into these places. In this guide, we'll tell you exactly how to do that.

How to Unlock Siege Weapons in Valheim

As with most items, you can unlock Siege Weapons in Valheim by finding all of their requisite crafting components. Here's what you need for each of the two Siege Weapons currently in the game as of the Ashlands Update:

Battering Ram

• 20 Ashwood
• 10 Flametal
• 2 Surtling Core
• Workbench

Catapult

• 20 Ashwood
• 10 Flametal
• 1 Charred Cogwheel
• Workbench

Once you collect all of those pieces, you'll be able to build these Siege Weapons just like Carts and other Misc buildables.

How to Use Valheim Siege Weapons

Each of the Valheim Siege Weapons has different methods of use. Siege Weapons are necessary for breaching the Charred Fortresses in the Ashlands Biome and, ultimately, for getting the items you need to summon the Ashlands boss Fader.

Here's how to use Siege Weapons in Valheim:

Battering Ram

To use the Battering Ram, you'll have to first transport it to the place where you'd like to use it. Ideally, you'll want to build the Battering Ram right where you're going to use it and then break it down later for long-range transport, much like a Cart.

The Battering Ram can be moved around by attaching yourself to it like a Cart. You can then move it into position to prepare to attack.

When you're ready to use the Battering Ram, you'll have to fuel the furnace in the back with up to 25 Wood. Once fueled, the two arms of the Battering Ram will start punching directly forward. The Battering Ram's arms will continuously punch forward as long as someone is moving it around.

Unfortunately, the person using the Battering Ram is incredibly vulnerable. Ideally, you'll want to have someone covering you so you're not open to easy attacks. If you're alone, your best bet is to clear the immediate area of enemies before using the Battering Ram.

Catapult

The Catapult is a little more complex to use than the Battering Ram. Much like the Battering Ram, you can attach yourself to the Catapult and move it around like a Cart. You should wait until you're at the location of your intended attack before building it.

Naturally, Catapults require ammo. You can put a surprising number of items into the Catapult's basket, but you'll want to make either a Grausten Payload or an Explosive Payload; both of these items can be crafted at a Workbench.

Next, you'll need to position the Catapult. This requires getting out of the harness and deploying the spiked legs. The legs can do damage to anything that contacts them which gives the Catapult some inherent defense, but deploying the legs makes the Catapult very difficult to move.

Once the Catapult is in place, you simply need to place a payload onto your hotbar and push that button while hovering your cursor over the Catapult's basket. Be careful not to accidentally press the work hotbar button when loading the Catapult — you may accidentally throw an important weapon or item right at the enemy base!
