Haunted Pokedex

Pokemon may at first glance appear to be a playful and colorful world for players of all ages to escape into, but when you begin to peel back the layers of these games, you begin to uncover something a bit more sinister. It's easy to point fingers at the countless criminal organizations and those who would abuse Pokemon, but oftentimes, it's these adorable creatures themselves who are the most disturbing parts of these games. The worst part? You don't realize just how terrifying some of these Pokemon are until after you've captured them, as that's the only way to get their Pokedex entry.

Here are 10 of the most terrifying Pokedex entries from across the games.

10. Lampent

Lampent in Pokemon

"The spirits it absorbs fuel its baleful fire. It hangs around hospitals waiting for people to pass on."

Of all the Pokemon on this list, Lampent might be the most gentle. Maybe. Like a cat in a hospice who can predict when people are about to pass, Lampent likewise identifies people who are about to die and hangs around them. Though this isn't for comforting purposes. Lampent simply wants to absorb the person's spirit to help fuel their fire.

9. Haunter

Haunter in Pokemon

"If you get the feeling of being watched in darkness when nobody is around, Haunter is there."

It's possible Haunter is just misunderstood, but Haunter's abilities and Pokedex entries make this Pokemon not very friendly to humans. Not only does the Pokedex say that if you feel like you're being watched when no one is around, Haunter is there, but the Pokedex also says victims who get licked by Haunter will shake uncontrollably until death eventually comes. Haunter is described to stalk in total darkness, patiently waiting for its next victim.

8. Yamask

Yamask in Pokemon

"Each of them carries a mask that used to be its face when it was human. Sometimes they look at it and cry."

If there was ever a Pokemon that served as straight-up nightmare fuel, it's Yamask. Similar to Gengar, this Pokedex entry references what the Pokemon was like when it used to be human, showing that the line between humans and Pokemon is as thin as it has ever been. The fact that Yamask will look at the mask of its former human face and cry shows that maybe death isn't the worst thing that can happen to you in this universe. It's turning into a Pokemon.

7. Cacturne

Cacturne in Pokemon

"If a traveler is going through a desert in the thick of night, Cacturne will follow in a ragtag group. The Pokémon are biding their time, waiting for the traveler to tire and become incapable of moving."

If one predator Pokemon wasn't terrifying enough, a roving horde of them is something unimaginable. Pokemon stats show this Pokemon at only about four feet tall but weighing 170 pounds. If you're lost in the desert and are tired, dehydrated, and have no way of getting home, it may not be the elements that kill you if a gang of Cacturne find you first. The worst part is you may see them following you before you're at the brink of exhaustion, turning the world of Pokemon into some kind of demented It Follows.

6. Gengar

Gengar in Pokemon

"It apparently wishes for a traveling companion. Since it was once human itself, it tries to create one by taking the lives of other humans."

Ghost Pokemon, by their nature, are pretty creepy, but Gengar and all of its former evolutions specifically stand out as creatures you wouldn't want to come across in the dead of night. In this Pokedex entry from Pokemon Sun & Moon, Gengar is revealed to not only have once been human, but also actively takes the lives of other humans to take the place of the life it once lived. This is so sadly tragic and gives me a new appreciation for trainers who are able to form strong relationships with their Gengar.

5. Phantump

Phantump in Pokemon

"These Pokemon are stumps possessed by the spirits of children who died in the forest. Their cries sound like eerie screams."

Many fans have theorized that this stump Pokemon is what happens when children don't return from The Lost Woods in The Legend of Zelda. This is also not the only Pokedex entry to reference the death of children, showing that no matter what region you're from, there's a risk to the youngest inhabitants. Which makes it seem extra peculiar that this is a world where parents are so eager to kick 10-year-olds out of the home to go explore an entire continent.

4. Froslass

Froslass in Pokemon

"When it finds humans or Pokemon it likes, it freezes them and takes them to its chilly den, where they become decorations."

Ice and cold are ruthless elements, and Froslass wields them with no remorse. In the Pokemon Sword Pokedex, Froslass is described as the lingering regrets of a woman who died on a snowy mountain. It apparently freezes humans and Pokemon they like for decorations. Don't go into the frozen mountains lightly, or you may end up as a decoration in a Pokemon den.

3. Bewear

Bewear in Pokemon

"This Pokemon has the habit of hugging its companions. Many Trainers have left this world after their spines were crushed by its hug."

Bewear is the epitome of a Pokemon who doesn't know their own strength. Bewear is a tall, powerful Pokemon who's capable of shattering bones with their death hug. Seeing as even an affectionate hug could lead to crushed organs, it's not hard to imagine only the bravest trainers would risk having a Bewear in their party.

2. Drifloon

Drifloon in Pokemon

"Stories go that it grabs the hands of small children and drags them away to the afterlife. It dislikes heavy children."

Drifloon's Pokedex entries slowly become more disturbing as the series go on. In Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, Drifloon is simply described as a Pokemon formed by the spirits of people and Pokemon, and that it tugs on the hands of children to seal them away, though it gets pulled around instead. It's not until Pokemon Sun that we specifically see the Pokedex reference Drifloon dragging children to the afterlife and that they dislike heavy children. The entry in Pokemon Moon isn't much better, describing that if its body were to burst, Drifloon's soul would spill out with a screaming sound.

1. Palossand

Palossand in Pokemon

"Palossand is known as the Beach Nightmare. It pulls its prey down into the sand by controlling the sand itself, and then it sucks out their souls."

The more you dig into Pokedex entries, the common theme you'll see are how many Pokemon are either made up of souls or are trying to take your soul. Palossand is no exception, and seeing as it has earned itself the nickname as the Beach Nightmare, one can only wonder how many people have succumbed to this Pokemon while enjoying what was supposed to be a pleasant beach day. How many children have been sucked beneath the sand while playing with their pales, never to be seen again? Palossand is ruthless, and it makes me wonder how any beach in the Pokemon universe could be safe.
