The new edition of Warhammer 40,000 is on the way and to prepare for it, we've put together 3 guides looking at each of the New 40K Featured Factions. Each guide will show you how to prepare for your new army, starting with a small force for the 40K skirmish game, Kill Team. We'll show you how to create a force for use in Kill Team games, which you can then expand into full armies for the new edition when it's released.
So if you've always wanted to play Warhammer 40K, this new edition is your chance to start, or if you just want to start a new army, or you simply want to know how to get into Kill Team, then these guides are for you.
We've got a full guide to all Kill Team products, and this guide supplements that. We'll repeat a little bit, with some information on what you need to play Kill Team, but for more detailed information on all the products, check out our full guide here.
New 40K has 3 Featured Factions, and we're going to continue this series with the other Imperial Warhammer 40,000 force, the Adepta Sororitas.
What Do You Need To Play Kill Team
Before you build your Kill Team force, you'll need some Kill Team Essentials. The minimum required to play is:
- Kill Team Rulebook
- Kill Team Annual 2019 (Has the datasheets for the Adepta Sororitas units)
- Dice (D6s and D10s - now available in a cool Dice and Cards pack)
- Measuring Tool
You will also hear about some other Kill Team products, and these aren't essential for getting in to Kill Team but can be purchased to expand your games if you want, but for the purposes of building up a Kill Team force for entry into 40K later, all you need is the above essentials.
If you want an easy way into Kill Team, there is a starter set available that comes with the rulebook, dice, a measuring stick, a Kill Team board, scenery, 2 factions (Tau and Adeptus Astartes) along with tactics cards and tokens. It is a very reasonable cost to get you gaming straight away and all you would need to add is the Kill Team Annual 2019 to expand to the full Adepta Sororitas rules.
Adepta Sororitas Kill Teams
The Adepta Sororitas fit between the Astra Millitarum and Adeptus Astartes in ability and equipment. They are slightly more effective at shooting and better armored than their Imperial Guard allies, but not as effective or well equipped as the Space Marines. They get an invulnerable save and are effective counter-psykers against Grey Knights and Thousand Sons.
If you want to play competitive Kill Team, which we'll cover that in later articles, you won't need anything more than you're buying for a beginner. We're only be looking at Kill Team units from the Core Rulebook and Annual and won't be including any other supplements.
Adepta Sororitas Units
All the Adepta Sororitas are fairly durable with their good saving throw and invulnerable save, their melee-focused units are also very persistent at sticking around to get into combat. They are decently accurate, but do suffer against swarm forces, but not as much as the elite forces like Custodes and Adeptus Astartes.
- Battle Sister - The line troops of the Adepta Sororitas. Battle Sisters are the core of your Adepta Sororitas kill team. They are average at shooting and melee and come with a 3+ save and 6+ invulnerable save. 1 sister can be a Sister Superior, who will almost certainly be your Leader and 2 more can be Gunners, who can replace their bolters with a choice from the heavy weapons. 1 sister can also take a Simulacrum Imperialis, which boosts the Invulnerable save for sisters within 6 inches.
- Sister Repentia - The Repentia are sisters who are trying to atone for sins through penance. You're allowed to take 1 Sister Repentia, and you should. They can be durable if not left out in the open and pretty deadly in close combat.
- Arco-Flagellant - The flagellants are mind-scrubbed berserker warriors. They don't have the invulnerable saving through that the Sororitas have, but they do have an additional wound and slightly higher strength. If you're looking for a little more melee focus, these are your option.
What to buy
You can build an Adepta Sororitas kill team easily with the Battle Sisters box, so buy that first. You will only be using 1 Repentia from the Repentia box and a couple of Arco-Flagellants from there box, so they are not essential purchases but will add a punch to your Kill Team and will form the core of your force in New40K.
- Battle Sisters Squad (Build a Sister Superior with Combi-Plasma, 1 with a Heavy Bolter, 1 with a Heavy Flamer, 1 with the Simulacrum Imperialis and 5 Battle Sisters with bolters. You can leave the final sister, or build her with a Flamer)
- Repentia Squad (You will only need 1 for Kill Team, but you can build them all as their armaments are the same)
- Arco-Flagellants (You will only need a couple for Kill Team, but you can build them all as their armaments are the same)
You don't need to build all of the Sisters, instead, you can build as required, finishing them off when New40K is released.
If you want to expand your lists further, the Kill Team Annual 2019 also has some profiles for the Blackstone Fortress heroes from the Core Game and Escalation expansion, some of which can be added to your Adepta Sororitas force. They're not essential. but they do add some great variety.
Beginner Adepta Sororitas Lists
Using only 1 box of Battle Sisters, a beginner Kill Team list:
- Sister Superior with Combi-Plasma (Leader)
- Sister Gunner with Heavy Bolter (Heavy)
- Sister Gunner with Heavy Flamer (Demolitions)
- Battle Sister with Simulacrum Imperialis (Comms)
- Battle Sister
- Battle Sister
- Battle Sister
- Battle Sister
- Battle Sister
If you want to throw in a Sister Repentia, or Arco-Flagellant box you could use this list as a beginner Kill Team list:
- Sister Superior with Combi-Plasma, Power-Sword, and Plasma Pistol (Leader)
- Sister Gunner with Heavy Bolter (Heavy)
- Sister Gunner with Heavy Flamer (Demolitions)
- Battle Sister with Simulacrum Imperialis (Comms)
- Sister Repentia / Arco-Flagellant (depending on which box you add)
- Battle Sister
- Battle Sister
- Battle Sister
You can replace the Comms specialism by giving the Sister Repentia Zealot, but in a beginner list, Comms is a safer bet as getting your Zealot into combat can require some work.
Kill Team forces are built from a command roster of 20, usually around scenarios and knowing your opponent's faction, so these lists aren't optimized Adepta Sororitas lists, but they will give you a feel for how Battle Sister kill teams work and a great base to build up your future Warhammer 40,000 force from.
We're going to follow up this article will a specialized optimized Kill Team guide and when the next edition of Warhammer 40,000 is released, a guide to taking this force of Adepta Sororitas, into the new edition of 40K.
The Adepta Sororitas and Kill Team products used to produce this guide were provided by Firestorm Games.
