This Palia Secret Depths Quest Guide has a full Temple of the Roots Walkthrough and will help you solve its sliding tile puzzle!
Bahari Bay has plenty of secrets to uncover in Palia. Aside from a bunch of cool fish and valuable ore, you can also find two temples: the Temple of the Gales and the Temple of the Roots. In this guide, we'll tell you how to unlock the Temple of the Roots and how to complete it.
How to Unlock the Palia Secret Depths Quest
You can unlock the Palia Secret Depths Quest by completing quests "Keeper of Waves," "Keeper of Gales," and "Keeper of Flames." This trio of Quests will be unlocked after you finish the Temple of the Gales.

Once you've completed the Quests "Keeper of Waves," "Keeper of Gales," and "Keeper of Flames," you'll get an additional short Quest called "Keeper of Roots" which is simply a short conversation with Einar. Once you've talked to him, he'll tell you to meet him and Hekla at the Temple of Roots in Bahari Bay.
The only tool you'll need for this adventure is the Pickaxe; though you won't be doing any mining within the Temple of the Roots, you will need it to break through sealed walls. Make sure it's fully repaired!
Entering the Temple
First, let's enter the Temple. Fortunately, there are no complex puzzles to solve here — all you have to do is talk to Hekla (and, if desired, Einar). Next, use your pickaxe to break through the broken wall and you'll be in the first room of the Temple.
The Large Hall and the Flowstone Gate Hub
The first room of the Temple of the Roots is absolutely massive — and it's also packed with treasure. All you need to do to progress is reach the bottom of the room by using your glider, but taking a careful route can get you some free stuff without much extra work.
First, look down and to the west and you'll see a giant pipe. The first Ancient Chest is located on this pipe as shown in the image below.
Glide down to this pipe. If you fall, there is a ladder that allows you to climb all the way back up to the top.
Once you're on the pipe, stand on the elbow corner piece and look down to the north, all the way by the northern wall — you'll see the second Ancient Chest there.
Glide down to this location and collect the Ancient Chest.
From here, look down and to the north again — you'll see the third Ancient Chest next to a tree.
Now that that's done, drop down to the floor and go to the white ring with a bunch of Flowstone Gates. Activate the central Flowstone Gate and it will open up a path back to the top. Hekla and Einhart will both walk through the Flowstone Gate and join you at the bottom.
Next, look for an open golden pipe on the ground level. Head into it and you'll make your way into the second room.
The Moving Platform
First things first: when you exit the pipe leading to the second room, immediately look to your right — you'll see another pipe with an Ancient Chest inside of it.
After you've grabbed it, walk further ahead and you'll see a moving platform over a gap.
Before you try to cross the platform, drop into the gap; another Ancient Chest can be found near the southeastern wall.
Climb back up and use the moving platforms to cross the gap. Continue walking forward and the next Flowstone Gate will automatically open.
Once again, Hekla and Einar will follow you. You'll be in front of a closed door. This time, there's a galdur head similar to the ones you found in the Human Overseer Stations — this is The Gardener. Walk up to the head and speak to it.
Unfortunately, The Gardener is programmed to ensure that all Galdur (the giant friendly mechs like Einar and Hekla) only follow their "Oneness" — their singular designated purpose. Einar's friendship with you and others in town is a violation of this oneness, so The Gardener initiates a procedure to do a factory reset on Einar and erase his personality.
You can't convince him to stop no matter what you do, and now you have a mission beyond exploring the temple: you need to stop The Gardener so you can save Einar from being permanently erased.
The Two Buttons
The fourth room consists of a bunch of moving platforms and two buttons — your immediate goal is to reach those two buttons and activate them.
Make your way across the platforms and hit the buttons. If you fall down below, you'll respawn back on a safe platform like usual.
The door will open after you've pushed both buttons. Walk through it, then break the subsequent wall with your Pickaxe.
The Laser Platform
The next room has another moving platform going around a curve. What you can't see from your position is that there is a laser beam around the corner, and hitting it will knock you back to the start.
Before you try to conquer this challenge, you're going to want to go into the pipe on the opposite side of the gap — there's another Ancient Chest in there to collect.
Grab the Ancient Chest, then drop down into the pit and climb back up. Hop on the platform, and get ready to jump over the laser.
Jumping over the laser is simply a matter of good timing. Jump too early or too late and you'll get hit by the laser. If you do get hit, don't worry too much — you'll respawn a short distance away and you can try again.
You'll have another wall to break with your Pickaxe and another Flowstone Gate to activate after you get past the laser. Head into it — we're almost done!
The Transportation Room
The next room is clearly some kind of transportation room; it has a bunch of gondolas moving around carrying broken (or half-finished) galdur.
There's no special strategy to be found here — all you need to do is make your way through to the next room.
Confronting The Gardener
The final room will lead you to a console with a series of buttons — this is the control station for The Gardener. Speak with Hekla; she suggests that you start pushing random buttons.
Push a button. It won't do anything, so talk to Hekla again. After that, you'll be able to talk with The Gardener.
You have a bunch of dialogue choices that you can make, but there aren't really any "wrong answers" as far as I could tell. At the end of your conversation, you'll be able to convince The Gardener to restore Einar.
Leaving The Temple of the Roots — Almost
With Einar saved, you can now leave the Temple of the Roots. Head through the Flowstone Gate to get back to the hub, then head through the central Flowstone Gate at the Hub to get back to the surface.
Although... doesn't it seem like we might have missed something? Yep, we still have a wonderful sliding tile puzzle to conquer. Speak with both Hekla and Einar and they'll helpfully tell you that the sliding tile puzzle was in the entrance foyer the whole time.

Next Steps
With the Temple of the Roots completed, you've reached the end of the current storyline. There's not much more to do for now, but you can prepare for the next update by completing other quests.
It seems that you're going to need to work with The Order in order to progress to the next part of the story when Palia is updated again. If you haven't yet unlocked Subira, you'll want to make sure that you get that done before the next update drops!
