A new third-party D&D 5e supplement is coming to Kickstarter. This new project, Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass, is a book that aims to bring the immersive qualities of Studio Ghibli films to your tabletop sessions.
Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass announcement
According to a press release, Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass is the latest project by 1985 Games. 1985 Games are most well known as the creators of Dungeon Craft, a series of highly modular miniature battle maps, and their GM aid, Deck of Stories.
Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass is 250-page supplement containing new material for D&D 5e. Those pages contain new spells, magic items, character subclasses, and monster statblocks.
But the biggest draw for this book is its emphasis on cozy nostalgia. The book is heavily inspired by several Studio Ghibli films, including Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, and Princess Mononoke.
Other cited inspirations include Akira Toriyama's influential manga Dragonball, Pendleton Ward's animated series Adventure Time, and Nintendo's open-world adventure game, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
1985 Games has enlisted several talented artists to bring that blend of environmentalist fantasy and imagination to Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass. Those artists include Varguy Art, whose work is both minimal and expressive, and Panel Per Day's detailed and dynamic style.
Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass is the latest in a line of tabletop trends on Kickstarter. The platform has seen considerable growth on tabletop projects since 2021, with several of their most successful projects ending with millions of dollars funded.
Several of those projects include the Bloodborne-inspired 5e book, Steinhardt's Guide to the Eldritch Hunt, Magpie Games' TTRPG Avatar: Legends, and Monte Cook Games' adaptation of the horror anthology podcast, Old Gods of Appalachia.
The Kickstarter campaign for Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass will launch on August 1, 2023.
