Our Nightingale Armor and Clothing Guide will go over how gearing up works in the game, including how to increase the item level of your equipment.
Of course, proper clothing is only half of what you'll need, so make sure to pick up some upgraded weapons along the way. The further you get, the better realms — and in turn resources — you'll have access to, letting you gear up your character even further.
How Armor and Clothing Works
Armor and clothing in Nightgale is very important, as it determines a good number of your stats and survivability. What you can equip is split into seven categories:
- Hats
- Gear
- Back
- Tops
- Bottoms
- Gloves
- Shoes
Each piece comes with an item level, with the average of those (plus whatever weapon you're using) determining your overall level. While the number itself doesn't have a direct effect, it's a good measure of which realms you'll be able to take on.
As you take damage, clothing can be become damaged and must be repaired using essence dust (the white currency obtained by killing basic enemies or right clicking items and selecting extract).
Upgrading Armor and Clothing
Upgrading your clothing in Nightingale primarily comes in two forms. The first is by crafting clothing that has a higher base item level.
The second is by increasing the clothing's rarity at an Upgrade Bench (higher tier benches let you upgrade items further). By spending the corresponding tier of essence, you can immensely increase the item level and stats of an item.
As a general rule of thumb, you'll always want to upgrade any new piece of clothing to the highest available rarity right after making it.
Infusions
Compared to rarity upgrades, Nightingale clothing infusions are a little more tricky to make use of. When you upgrade clothing, they gain new infusion slots. You can then place infusions into these slots (one per rarity).
However, you can only place infusions that increase stats that are already on that item. For example, an infusion that increases stamina regeneration can only be placed onto an item that already has the stamina regeneration stat on it.
How to Unlock More Armor and Clothing
Most of the Nightingale armor and clothing you'll unlock will come from Essence Traders found in each realm. Different traders will have access to specific types of clothing crafting recipes (some have none at all).
On top of unlocking recipes, you'll also need the right tier of Sewing Bench, and any related Augmentation buildings (these are listed on the clothing's recipe in the guidebook).
