From Software and Bandai Namco have released a new Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree story trailer that sets up the narrative for the upcoming DLC expansion.
As the trailer begins, a voiceover speaks about "the seduction and the betrayal" that gave rise to both Gold and Shadow. It's all preceded by a mention of "Miquella the Kind", the central figure around which Shadow of the Erdtree will seemingly revolve.
Following this introduction, we hear about a "war unseen" as giant flame constructs march across a city. The voiceover describes the war as "a purge without grace or honor", led by "the tyranny of Messmer's flame".
We then hear that Kindly Miquella has "abandon[ed] everything" as we see a series of marks that look a lot like one of Elden Ring's Great Runes. Since these are usually held by gods and demigods, we can perhaps infer that this is Miquella's Great Rune.
Miquella has seemingly stripped himself of his "Golden flesh" and "even his fate" in order to venture into the Land of Shadow, although we're still not sure exactly what he's doing there.
The voiceover says that "we", presumably referring to the group of Tarnished we see in the trailer, "are not deterred". It seems, then, that you'll be following in Miquella's footsteps as he roams the Land of Shadow, and you'll presumably find out what happened to the realm along the way.
