Hexworks and CI Games have released what appears to be the final major Lords of the Fallen update, bringing a feature that the developers are calling "genre-defining" in the form of Modifiers.
This, according to the devs, concludes the Lords of the Fallen roadmap released last year, which promised new questlines, split balancing between PvE and PvP, and various other gameplay improvements.
Titled "Master of Fate", this update's main feature is the so-called Advanced Game Modifier System, which allows you to "fully customize your playthrough" of Lords of the Fallen by adding seven modifiers you can tweak yourself.
These seven modifiers can either make your game significantly easier or significantly harder, depending on which ones you activate. Here's a full list of them.
- Ironman: Adds permadeath to the game, so if you're killed, you'll restart at the beginning. Player progression and items are retained after death.
- Pre-upgraded loot: Gear you find in the world will be upgraded to your current level when you find it.
- Randomized loot: Everything enemies drop, except quest items, progression items, and unique boss items, is randomized.
- Randomized enemies: Enemies are randomized throughout the world. Doesn't include bosses.
- More enemies: As you'd expect, this one adds more enemies to the world.
- Withered healing: All healing you receive must be confirmed by dealing damage, just like the Withered Healing mechanic.
- Vestige decay: Allows you to set some Vestiges (i.e. bonfires) as decayed, meaning you can't rest at them.
These modifiers will have to be activated when you're starting a new game; it doesn't look like you'll be able to activate them partway through a playthrough, so you'll have to start again if you want to try any of them out.
Lots of other things have also been added in Lords of the Fallen update 1.5, including "rigorous difficulty balancing", new boss movesets and AI, and new spells to try out.

Lords of the Fallen is available right now on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. You can read my review of it here if you want to see whether it's a worthy Soulslike.
