Frostpunk 2 has been officially revealed by developer 11 bit studios. Like the original, it'll task you with constructing and maintaining a settlement in a frozen post-apocalyptic landscape. It's coming to PC via Steam, Epic, and GOG.
What can we expect from Frostpunk 2?
Frostpunk 2 will take place thirty years after the apocalyptic storm that rendered much of the world an icy wasteland. The age of coal has ended, and a new age of oil dependency is upon you. As the leader of a resource-hungry settlement, you'll have to make decisions about how to keep your population happy, how to bring in resources to sustain you, and how to deal with both internal and external threats. You can check out the rather striking and evocative Frostpunk 2 reveal trailer right here.
The game's co-director Jakub Stokalski says that Frostpunk 2 will go "vastly beyond" the scope of the original game. It'll be more than a straightforward sequel, Stokalski says. Instead, it'll build on its predecessor, but add a brand new layer of theming revolving around human nature versus trying to build a more egalitarian society. This new conflict will penetrate all of Frostpunk 2's systems, be they political, technological, or societal.
When is the Frostpunk 2 release date?
Sadly, 11 bit studios haven't announced a Frostpunk 2 release date just yet. The launch window is simply listed as "TBA" on the game's Steam page, where you can also wishlist it if you'd like. You can also add Frostpunk 2 to your wishlist on the Epic Store or on GOG if you prefer. The original Frostpunk was revealed in 2016 and released two years later, so there's a good chance we may see a similar development cycle for the sequel. 11 bit says it has more people working on this one, but also that it intends to increase the scope of the project accordingly.
We'll likely learn more about Frostpunk 2 gameplay and all the changes the sequel is making in the near future. In the meantime, be sure to wishlist it if you enjoyed the first one, as this looks like it's going to continue that game's bleak themes and morally grey decision-making. We'll bring you more on Frostpunk 2 as soon as we get it, so stay tuned.
