The epic Final Fantasy series is set for a new outing June 22nd, 2023 with Final Fantasy XVI. Continuing the trend of recent Final Fantasy titles this game will be an Action RPG. This game will release on PlayStation 5, though there has been some murmor about a PC edition.
Final Fantasy XVI takes place in the realm of Valisthea, which is in a dark fantasy world. Peace is failing, and the blight spreads threatening the light of the world that comes from the Mothercrystals. Against this are Dominants, men and women with the ability to summon powerful summons called Eikons who can fight back against the darkness.
Starring Clive Rosefield, the First Shield of Rosaria, who is sworn to protect his younger brother Joshua, the Dominant of Phoenix and who ends up swearing revenge on the Dark Eikon Ifrit. Players take on the role of Clive, the firstborn child of the Archduke of Rosaria, one of the six factions that control the world. Strife seems to be breaking out between each of these six factions and Clive, as well as his younger brother Joshua, and adopted sister Jill, are caught in the middle of it all.
Just as important as Clive though is Torgal, the northern dog he finds and adventures with Clive during the game after being separated from him for over a decade. Torgal fights with Clive, and helps heal him as they fight against the darkness, with other party members who join Clive's mission, but fight outside of player control, including of course this game's Cid.
The game will feature a variety of combat styles, primarily with Clive weilding his sword and magic tackling enemies head on. A mechanic important to the story as well as to gameplay is that Eikon's, the term for summons in this game, are able to be transformed into by characters. Gameplay footage has shown intense battles between these Eikon's where the player controls Clive as he's transformed into Ifrit.
