Our Final Fantasy XIV Dawntrail Aether Currents Guide will go over how to unlock flying in each of the expansion’s zones.
FFXIV Dawntrail Aether Currents work similarly to previous expansions. Each zone contains 10 Aether Currents that can be found on the map (though you generally can't access all of them without story progression), with another 5 tied to quests.
4 quest Aether Currents are available via quests with blue markers and a plus symbol (these unlock as you progress through the story), with the last unlocking via main story completion in the zone.
If you want an easier time checking if you’re close to the aether currents, you can add the Aether Compass to your hotbar via the Duty > Collections menu.
Kozama'uka
Only some of the Kozama'uka's Aether Currents will be available during your first visit. The south side of the map will become available as the story progresses.
*1 - This is inside the caves, rather than up on the cliffs, meaning it can be accessed as soon as you enter the zone for the first time.
Urqopacha
Only the first half of the Urqopacha Aether Currents are available on your first visit. The second half are reachable once you progress through the main story.
Yak T'el
As with the previous two zones, only half of the Yak T'el Aether Currents are available until you make enough progress in the main story.
Shaaloani
Unlike the other FFXIV Dawntrail Aether Currents, all non-quest Shaaloani Aether Currents are available from the start — though you'll still need to go through the main story to unlock flying here.
Heritage Found
The Heritage Found Aether Currents go back to the same pattern as the first three zones — five in the first section, five in the second that are only available after progressing through the main story.
