Final Fantasy XVI is here, and we’ve all been eagerly awaiting the next entry in the historied role playing series from Square Enix. Upon the arrival of a game as hyped up as this, it’s only natural to look back on the history of the series– including its forgotten entries.
A long time ago, there was a game called Final Fantasy XIII, and it aimed to recapture the same spirit and hype of Final Fantasy VII. Final Fantasy VII was a modern take on Final Fantasy that appealed to the west and became a mega hit. Today I'm reminded of these massive Final Fantasy entries seeing the hype for XVI skyrocket.
Similarly, XIII was doing everything in its power to achieve that same level of global acclaim from breaking exclusivity with PlayStation to get the game on the Xbox 360, to planning spinoffs much like the compendium of Final Fantasy VII.
That’s where the topic of todays discussion comes in. Final Fantasy Versus XIII was a game envisioned by Tetsuya Nomura as a fantasy based on reality with action combat and a sleek aesthetic. But unfortunately it was canned and remixed into Final Fantasy XV without the Kingdom Hearts creator at the wheel.
Despite this, Nomura’s influence at Square Enix has just grown since Final Fantasy XV, what with his involvement in the VII remake saga and all, but in addition to that Final Fantasy Versus XIII manages to live on as well.
Nomura’s pride and joy, the Kingdom Hearts series, is on the precipice of a reinvention and after years of teases and allusion to his canceled Final Fantasy we may be one step closer to seeing that vision realized in some form.
