Publisher PQube and developer Gambir Studio have announced a new fantasy roguelite spin on the legend of King Arthur. Knight vs Giant: The Broken Excalibur is pencilled in for a 2023 release, and it pits the legendary king of Camelot against a host of hideous monsters as he fights to return his kingdom to its former glory.
Knight vs Giant takes place in a Camelot blighted by Void Giants, who have destroyed the realm. Merlin transports Camelot to the Astral Dimension, from which Arthur and Excalibur (albeit a broken version of the sword) must sally forth to battle the Void Giants in order to restore Camelot. You can check out the announcement trailer for Knight vs Giant: The Broken Excalibur right here.
Gameplay-wise, Gambir's new roguelite looks like exactly the kind of thing that will tide you over while you wait for Supergiant's Hades II. You'll battle through blighted areas of Camelot in a top-down isometric hack-and-slash roguelite, fighting bosses and corrupted creatures while collecting blessings from legendary knights. As you explore, you'll unlock new permanent upgrades and features for Camelot to help you progress further through the game.
The map itself is randomly generated, but Gambir and PQube are promising beautiful hand-drawn visuals, so "saving the world won't get boring" and no two runs will be identical. As you battle through Camelot, you'll also encounter NPCs who need your help; after all, who is King Arthur if he isn't a hero to his people? It certainly sounds like a novel and intriguing spin on the King Arthur legend.
Knight vs Giant: The Broken Excalibur arrives on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch sometime this year. If you want to know whether this is your kind of game or not, then you can download a playable demo over on the game's Steam page right now.
