In May 2021, Chip Theory Games announced they were developing The Elder Scrolls: Betrayal of the Second Era. While this isn't the only officially licensed tabletop adaptation of Bethesda's beloved fantasy RPG series, Chip Theory's project is a sort of prequel, allowing players to interact with the world of Tamriel during the turbulent times of the Second Era. Because of this, they have consulted extensively with Bethesda and Zenimax Media to ensure authenticity. Now, it seems that that attention to detail has paid off, with the project becoming a major hit on the platform Gamefound.
The Elder Scrolls: Betrayal of the Second Era Gamefound campaign
The Gamefound campaign for The Elder Scrolls: Betrayal of the Second Era went live on March 27. As mentioned before, the board game is a cooperative experience, allowing 1-4 players to play as one of the iconic races from the Elder Scrolls series and explore the world of Tamriel together. The game will include complex maps depicting different regions and complex dungeons, as well as classic creatures, unique items, rulebooks, and gazettes, all to help bring players into the world of Tamriel.
The different pledge levels for The Elder Scrolls: Betrayal of the Second Era, are few but impactful. They are as follows:
- Base Game Pledge for $195: A copy of the base game and all unlocked stretch goals
- Gameplay Bundle for $230: A copy of the base game, all unlocked stretch goals, and the Valenwood expansion
- All-In Bundle for $400: Everything in the Gameplay Bundle, an art book, playmat, embossed dice tray, weighted health chips, and upgraded chip bags
It must also be noted that Chip Theory Games' reputation of production transparency with its audience is still present here. In a recent update on the page, they held a five-hour-long livestream where they held a Q&A as well as a live playthrough of the current version of the game. They even openly talked about the challenges in insuring that every element of the game reaches its level of quality.
The campaign goal for The Elder Scrolls: Betrayal of the Second Era was $75,000. That goal was reached in two minutes and twenty-nine seconds. At the time of writing, the project has raised $1,976,949, more than 26 times their campaign goal, and it has only continued to increase. The campaign will conclude on April 23.
