Techland has announced that the Dying Light 2 Nightmare Mode update is heading your way this week, bringing an all-new way to experience some zombie-killing parkour action.
Nightmare Mode was originally scheduled to arrive sometime before winter ended, per the original Dying Light 2 roadmap, but it looks like it was delayed a touch. No matter, though, as Techland is gearing up to release it later this week.
As the name suggests, Nightmare Mode adds a harder difficulty level to Dying Light 2, but it does more than that; the aim seems to be to create a more immersive experience as you explore Villedor.
Per a new developer blog, Dying Light 2's Nightmare Mode will be based on the mode of the same name from the first game, but it'll feature a few extra modifiers as well.
Most HUD elements have been removed, so rather than relying on your UI, you'll need to use "your eyes and ears" to get around. What a novel concept!
Stamina will come back more slowly, and Techland says there will be graver "repercussions" for using all of your stamina up. Chases will also be more intense, and a new fifth chase level will spawn Volatile Tyrants to ruin your day.
Playing alongside other players will also make the experience harder rather than easier thanks to scaling, which will necessitate "good co-operation and communication" on the part of players experiencing Nightmare Mode together.
If you manage to finish the game on Nightmare Mode, you'll be rewarded with a "super unique outfit", according to Techland. You'll just have to play the game to find out what that outfit might be.
We don't have a release date for the Nightmare Mode update yet, but you can grab Dying Light 2 right now on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. Check out our review right here to see what we thought of it, and made sure to take a look at our guides if you need help navigating Villedor's winding streets.
