Fans of retro beat-'em-ups rejoice, for a new Double Dragon game is lining up to take your metaphorical quarters. Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons adds roguelite elements to the classic beat-'em-up formula, and it's heading to PC and consoles sometime this summer.
Rise of the Dragons will be the first Double Dragon game in six years, after 2017's Double Dragon IV, which our reviewer Alex called "a pure nostalgia trip". This one's doing things a little differently, though; it's developed by Secret Base and published by Modus, and it'll feature a "unique and dynamic level structure" that changes as you play, according to the devs.
It sounds like the levels themselves won't technically be randomly-generated; instead, the order in which you choose to take on the city's gang leaders will decide how difficult each stage is. Mission length, enemy numbers, and overall difficulty will all change dynamically depending on who you pick. You can take a look at the announcement trailer for Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons right here.
The two iconic protagonists of the Double Dragon franchise, Billy and Jimmy, will make their return in Rise of the Dragons, but you'll also be able to choose from 9 other characters, whom you'll unlock as you go. Each character has their own playstyle, so you'll be able to experiment with different characters to see who best suits you.
Of course, Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons will support two-player co-op as well; it wouldn't be much of a retro-inspired sidescrolling beat-'em-up if it didn't. The game will also come with a range of modifiers that let you tailor the experience to your own specifications, including toggling permadeath and even enabling an infinite mode.
Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons launches for PC, PlayStation consoles, Xbox platforms, and Nintendo Switch later this year. Stay tuned to TechRaptor for more news on this fun retro callback.
