Paradox has announced that the Cities: Skylines 2 PS5 and Xbox Series X|S release has once again been delayed, so you won't be playing this one on consoles this fall.
In a post on the official Paradox forums, the studio says that it has "not yet met the stability and performance targets" internally set for the game's console release, which means it'll miss its previously-mooted October release window.
The publisher says it's making "slow but steady progress" on Cities: Skylines 2 for consoles, but that "unresolved issues" which "harm the player experience" are still hanging around.
If all goes well, a new Release Candidate build, i.e. a build that could be suitable for release on consoles, will be submitted soon and will be reviewed in August.
Assuming that build is up to scratch, then the submission process will begin and a "solid release date" can be provided, but if the build doesn't pass muster, then there's a good chance the Cities: Skylines 2 console release could take a while longer yet.
This is far from the first time Cities: Skylines 2 has been delayed on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The game was originally due to arrive alongside its PC counterpart in October last year, but was pushed back to spring 2024 shortly before release.
Following that, the game was delayed further back in April, and at that point, Paradox tentatively suggested that October could be the console versions' release window. However, an October release was never officially confirmed.
The console delay for Cities: Skylines 2 is part of a wider set of problems for the game, which has been criticized by players since launch for an abundance of performance issues.
Paradox has since released a number of updates intended to address these problems, although the publisher has also acknowledged that many issues remain and that it has a "mountain to climb" before they're all fixed.
In any case, Cities: Skylines 2 won't be landing on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S any time soon, unfortunately. Until we hear more about that, you can check the game out right now on PC via Steam, and it's also available as part of a PC Game Pass subscription.
