Larian has announced that official Baldur's Gate 3 mod tools will arrive in September, as will everything else that's coming as part of the hotly-anticipated Patch 7.
We first learned that official mod support for Baldur's Gate 3 would arrive as part of Patch 7 back in April, but we now know roughly when we can expect it, although no final release date has been revealed yet.
The closed alpha for mod support kicks off today, according to a Baldur's Gate 3 community update on Steam, and another test will open up registrations in July, allowing Larian to work through player feedback for the rest of the summer.
In the aforementioned community update, Larian also sets out what mod tools and modding support will mean for Baldur's Gate 3.
Of course, it's possible to mod Baldur's Gate 3 right now, but implementing an official mod pipeline should make things much smoother and allow for better compatibility between each mod, as well as between mods and the game itself.
You'll still be able to mod Baldur's Gate 3 outside of Larian's official system if you want to, of course. Modding will use the mod.io platform and will be PC-only at first, but Mac support, as well as modding support for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S players, is on the cards too.
With that said, PlayStation and Xbox players won't have access to the Baldur's Gate 3 mod toolkit, so if you want to make your own mod for the game, you'll need to have a PC to do it.
The toolkit will let you create, edit, and upload mods, as well as loading in-game levels on a read-only basis, accessing internal editors, and more. It's set to be a fully-featured mod toolkit that should help you realize whatever crazy dreams you've got for Baldur's Gate 3 mods.
Baldur's Gate 3 is out right now for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Modding support is scheduled to arrive this September. Be sure to check out our Baldur's Gate 3 review if you've somehow not played the game yet and want to know if it's worth your time!
